What kills a PowerPoint Presentation?
Today, visual Presentations have become an important way to present information to others. That’s why majority of the people use Microsoft PowerPoint to create these presentations because it’s a program that facilitates and gives many options for your presentation. Whether it’s a business presentation, a lecture for a class, or just a picture slide show, it really matters how it is presented. The way it is made and presented are very important because if not done correctly it will just be a waste of your time because the people who are seeing it would not pay attention to it.
I can remember the worst PowerPoint presentation I had to sit through was in my high school history class. It might have been because my teacher was kind of old that he didn’t make the presentation very presentable. One of the main things that I hated was that the slides where totally filled with words or pictures. It just made me feel dizzy looking at all these words. But the worst thing was that the teacher read word by word out of the presentation. Why does he even make the presentation? He should just give us the information and we can read it. He was reading it to us like if we didn’t know how to read.
Another bad thing was the inconsistency in the background colors/ design and font. Every single slide had a different background color. Some had designs that made it hard to read the text that it had. It just frustrated me to not be able to read it that I just gave up and just stared at the screen. The change in fonts also was very frustrating. At times he will have a font that were not readable and in other slides a plain boring font with no creativity.
The teacher inserted historical letters, pictures, or parts of documents into the presentation. Which I find a very interesting thing to do to reference back. But the problem here was that they were too small to read what they said and too many pictures together that didn’t give focus to one particularly. So, when they tell you that it’s too small to read, I ask myself then why did they put it there if it’s worthless.
While he tried to make it an “exciting presentation” by adding sounds and transitions, he just made it worst. He had text entering one letter at a time which took a lot of time to get all the text inside. And when it was clicked to go to the next slide the words and pictures did some animation like swirl around a couple of times then fly away. This was really distracting and the animations didn’t seem to fit in the correct place. He had sounds and little animated pictures which are good to keep people engaged but since they would play throughout the whole presentation it made it distracting because I would stare at the animated icon or be concentrated on the next sound that came up.
If the teacher had used all these things correctly and in the right amount the presentation would have been a success. But since he didn’t he would lost the interest and engagement of the students. How do you expect to concentrate and stay focus in a presentation like this? So, whenever I do a PowerPoint presentation I try putting myself in the place of my audience. Is it too plain that makes it boring? Distracting? Difficult to understand the words? Confusing? Unnecessary information included? That’s what every presenter should do when they create a PowerPoint presentation so they have a good result when they present it.
